Michigan Tech has a total of 15 different learning centers and commons that are available to all students on-campus. Whether you need additional help with your course work, or are seeking to further your understanding on a topic, there is a learning center for you. Each learning center has its own schedule that can be found online or is posted near their entrances. Most learning centers offer both walk-in or scheduled appointments for coaching.
The three learning centers that see the highest numbers of students are the Math, Physics, and Chemistry Learning Centers. The Math Learning Center, which is located in Fisher 234, is able to help students with questions for courses from algebra, linear algebra, calculus, statistics, and differential equations. Math development executive McCoy Ziehl said, “The Math Learning Center is a great environment for doing math and getting help. You can also just do math around other people who are in your classes.”
The Physics Learning Center, which is located in Fisher 128, is available for all physics students but focuses on physics courses through the 2000 level. Andrew Konop, a coach at the Physics Learning Center, said, “Students should come to the learning centers because they can get one-on-one help with students who have taken the classes before and have been in the positions that they are in.”
The Chemistry Learning Center, which is located in ChemSci 208, is focused on helping students who are enrolled in first-year chemistry and organic chemistry courses. They hold weekly review sessions for University Chemistry I and II as well as Organic Chemistry I.
Another learning center is the Writing Center at Michigan Tech. The Writing Center, which is located in Walker 107, is able to provide both undergraduate and graduate level writing support. They can offer advice, help brainstorm, or give feedback on any and all writing needs at Michigan Tech no matter what class you are taking.
Some of the other learning centers on-campus are catered to individual departments or even specific majors, such as the Chemical Engineering Learning Commons that assists with all required chemical engineering courses through the 3000 level. The Civil Environmental Geospatial Engineering (CEGE) Student Success Center, located in Dillman 102, helps with a majority of the CEGE department courses. There is also the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Learning Center, located in MEEM 203, which helps students with statics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, and dynamics.
In addition to the various learning centers on-campus, there are plenty of different spots to study and do homework individually. Some of the more popular spots to do homework include the library main floor, which has 24-hour access as well as the silent study on the third floor of the library. The atrium in the Dow is another great study spot. The atrium spans the sixth to eighth floors, and has great views of the Portage.
