As Michigan Tech students begin to settle in for the semester, many should consider taking a look at two specific charges on their bill: the Experience Tech Fee and the Student Activity Fee, which together total $187 per semester per student.
These fees are required to be paid by all students, regardless of participation. According to the University, making the fees mandatory ensures equal access to campus events and allows financial aid and scholarships to cover the cost for students who receive them. The Experience Tech Fee, in place since 2008, is reviewed annually based on student usage, operating expenses, and student feedback.
The Experience Tech Fee provides access to many activities that define student life at Michigan Tech. One of the most notable benefits is a season pass to Mont Ripley, Michigan Tech’s ski hill. The pass provides unlimited skiing and snowboarding during the winter season, along with discounted rental equipment. Additionally, students can attend home hockey games for free at the John MacInnes Ice Arena. 750 seats are reserved by the Experience Tech fee for students to use on a first come first serve basis. The fee also covers 2 free tickets to performances at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts, featuring a variety of concerts, comedy, theater productions, and touring acts. Recreational access is another component, including use of the Gates Tennis Center for tennis and pickleball, and greens fees at the Portage Lake Golf Course. Students can also participate in a variety of intramural sports. The fee supports highly discounted equipment rentals for camping gear, cross country skiing, and more through the Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP).
While the Experience Tech Fee focuses on access to events and activities, the SAF supports what happens behind the scenes on campus. The SAF is the main source of funding for Registered Student Organizations, making it possible for student clubs to host events, travel, and operate throughout the school year. It also lends support to Michigan Tech traditions like Winter Carnival, and initiatives led by the Dean of Students and Student Affairs.
These fees are designed to make campus involvement more accessible for everyone. They provide a way to explore campus, meet new people, and develop a variety of interests.
