Men’s basketball in four-way tie in GLIAC

The Michigan Tech lady Huskies traveled to Ferris State University to take on the Bulldogs to finish out the 2016-2017 regular season on the road. Beating the Bulldogs 74-64 sealed home court in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals, which begin on Tuesday, Feb. 28. “It was a must win for us today and we were able to get it done on the road,” said head coach Kim Cameron. “We faced a lot of pressure from their defense and struggled at times but hit a couple of big shots against their press. I thought our bench did a great job coming in and providing some key minutes and points for us.”

“Elizabeth [Kelliher] had a strong game and the baskets that she made were very difficult against a very physical defense,” she continued. “We have another huge game against Northern Michigan on Thursday and we are taking it one game at a time. It’s very important for us to keep our heads down and keep getting better.”

While close, the Huskies never trailed the Bulldogs throughout the entirety of the game. Junior guard Brenna Heise, sophomore forward Elizabeth Kelliher, junior guard Lindsay Winter and junior guard Kelli Guy each ended the night with 13 points. Kelliher also led the team in rebounds with six for the evening.  Senior guard Morgan Anderson ended the game with a game high of eight assists.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team fell to Ferris State 81-76 on the road.  Ferris State University is ranked No. 24 in the nation. Home court for the GLIAC Quarterfinals for the men’s team will be decided when the Huskies take on the Northern Michigan University Wildcats. “I’m proud of our team for battling hard and playing tough throughout the game,” said head coach Kevin Luke. “We had a couple of lapses today which you can’t have against a great team like Ferris State. There are no moral victories, but we lost to a great team, we gave good effort and kept fighting. We did have the tempo in our favor which was one of our goals going in and we did a good job in that aspect. It will be good to have the support of the home crowd on Thursday when we host Northern Michigan who is playing well right now.”

Sophomore forward Kyle Monroe and sophomore guard Bryan Heath led the Huskies in points for the evening.  Freshman guard Tommy Lucca led the team in assists and rebounds with nine and six respectively. The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team is currently in a four-way tie for second place in the GLIAC North Division standings. Both teams will take on the Northern Michigan University Wildcats on Thursday, Feb. 23, in the SDC Wood Gym.  The lady Huskies are set to begin at 5:30 p.m. while the men’s Huskies are set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
