Ask the Dean: What has been your favorite Tech event so far?

Ask the Dean is a weekly column by MTU’s Dean of Students, Dr. Wallace Southerland III, where students can submit questions for him to answer. To submit a question, email lodesubmit@mtu.edu or fill out this form

Q: What has been your favorite Tech event so far?

All of them! I know, that’s the easy way out. This is one of the most difficult questions to answer because I’ve enjoyed EVERY event I’ve attended. “Connecting on a deeper level” with my Huskies gives me so much energy. The students are keeping me relevant, “goated,” and “sauced” ????.

As you might imagine, I’ve attended A LOT of events. Each event was an opportunity to hang-out with my Huskies and just have fun. Some events include Orientation, Welcome Week, GSG Baseball, GSG Welcome, CDI Welcome, Diwali, Judging the Royalty Competition, MUB Food-n-Costume (I was Black Panther), K-Day, Cardboard Boat Races, Broomball (shout-out to LCG), Winter Carnival stuff, Neon Skate, BSA Soul Train Night, East McNair Grill Cheese Night, McNair West End Girls’ Waffle Night, Quesadilla Night, Hockey, Football, Rock Climbing, Lumi 2021, Delta Zeta Open House, Theta Xi Epsilon Cocktail Party, Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards, Sigma Tau Gamma Dinner, 5K Color Run, Pep Band Fashion Show (that was wild!), Make a Difference Day with Phi Kappa Tau, MUB Escape Room, MUB Pancake Art, LeaderShape Panel, Fisher Hall movies, Fall Commencement, Cross Country Ski Race, and others.

Okay, enough stalling, of all my favorite Tech events, I would say that my favorite Tech event is….Cardboard Boat Race!  The event celebrates the intellectual prowess of our students, brings us together as a campus community, includes neighbors, involves alums, and lets people know that my Huskies are BRILLIANT and HILARIOUS.
