On Oct. 28, the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) met for their weekly meeting in the MUB. Topics of this meeting included the United Michigan Student Governments (UMSG) meeting, the Break Bus, and other business.
Over the summer, Michigan Tech’s Undergraduate Student Government (USG) began coordinating plans with other collegiate student governments across Michigan for United Michigan Student Governments (UMSG). This program aims to connect the voices of student governments across Michigan’s public universities and create a single point of communication straight from students to Michigan politics.
On Oct. 24, 60 students between 11 student governments from across the state met in Kalamazoo to ratify the UMSG constitution. After arriving back at Michigan Tech, USG Vice President Braden Quesenberry clarified that the goal of the constitution was “connecting Michigan schools with Michigan recruiters and policymakers,” which in turn will “help students find great jobs in Michigan.” When asked how students should respond to this new program, Quesenberry replied, “I want students to know that they can go to their student government to talk about issues. The goal of [UMSG] is to advocate for students through statewide communication, which starts when students voice their needs.” UMSG serves as the conduit for roughly 260,000 students across Michigan.
Topics of discussion at the meeting included the 30-year tradition of Husky broomball, which begins registration for teams Friday, Nov. 6. Referees and rink staff are still being hired.
The Husky Amateur Radio Club, which had to return $1,750 awarded to them on Oct. 2 to build a radio tower on property near the SDC., USG did not have the authority to permit the project.
Unfortunately for students without a ride, the Break Bus shuttles scheduled to transport students downstate for Thanksgiving Break sold out in only 14 minutes. Any student that did not get a ticket can sign-up for the waitlist. If USG gets enough people on the waitlist, they will get another bus.
Various members of Michigan Tech’s USG attended Wednesday’s meeting in costume, most notably Juan Sandoval, who fully embraced his new identity as Spider-Man. Sandoval went so far as to change his profile on the USG website to reflect his new identity as the web-slinger. Wizards and Butchers also made appearances.
For more information about USG and to see what happens behind the scenes on campus, visit usg.mtu.edu or attend a weekly meeting on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., located in the MUB Alumni Lounge.
