Never eat alone: Social creatures

We human beings are social animals. We seek companionship for our wellbeing. We have a constant need to connect, communicate and express emotion. We feel relieved when we share our sorrows and feel good when someone is happy for our accomplishments. We feel comfortable and safe when we are with someone we know. We always tend to reach out and help those whom we know. This trait of human beings can be observed in all aspects of life.

No human being is perfect. We constantly tend to do things which are holding us back in our lives. It could be smoking, drugs or procrastination. We know our defects but we cannot overcome them alone. The only way to get out of this is with the help of other people. Building a relationship with someone, opening up to someone is the only way one can overcome their deficiencies.

Relationships are the most important aspect in achieving success. Networking is the one most important thing if we want to get a job and we as students constantly hear this from many people around us. But that is not achieved by increasing the number of LinkedIn connections; it can be achieved by actually talking to people. Getting to know them on a personal level, that is true networking.

People need to be more porous, try to absorb more, get involved and build relationships. We feel that technology is helping us stay connected, but we tend to get self-involved and we forget to care about the people near us. The impact a person can create on one’s life is unquantifiable.

As we live by our daily routine we should always make sure that we create an environment around us to invite people to have a better relationship with us. If everyone does that successfully, we could build a better society, a better community where we genuinely care for each other. We have to realize and understand that the only way we can truly achieve success is with the help of others. We need to stop being afraid to ask for something. We should have the courage to be vulnerable.

We walk around campus looking into our smartphones, we have our meals while texting and chatting, we spend an hour in the gym with our iPods stuck in our ears. When was the last time we spoke with someone new in our class? Michigan Tech has such a diverse campus, with people from all over the world but we don’t even know who the neighbors are.

We need to get out of the matrix which we have built around ourselves, talk to the person sitting beside us in the classroom, talk to the person we get coffee from every morning, talk to the person walking beside us, talk to the person having lunch with us, because knowing more people is never harmful. There might be someone who could help you in your life living next door and all we have to do is knock.

We need to build better relationships with the people around us. We need to get to know people on a personal level because when we are building a relationship with someone, we have an opportunity to touch a soul, not theirs only but our soul by genuinely caring for that person. This is how we build ourselves, how we become better individuals and how we create an impact on society by caring for others. Let’s make it a point to talk to someone new whenever we have an opportunity to do so and build a better relationship with them.
