Although primarily an engineering school, Michigan Technological University offers a host of creative outlets for those with a passion for the arts. Minors, classes, and clubs each give students unique opportunities to find the perfect fit for their interests.
Cassidy Olivstra, secretary of the Creative Writing Club, said that her involvement in a student organization has positively affected her education at Tech. “Joining the Creative Writing Club gives students the opportunities to meet with published authors as well as share their art with other people, who can take a look at it to give them more ideas and send them out of writers block, which is something I think every writer needs and appreciates,” said Olivstra. The club meets on Fridays in Walker 109 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Digital Imaging Professor Ian Raymond strongly recommended the Media Production minor as a way to tack on more creativity. He also noted that employers appreciate students who have experience using creativity and media tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
Professor Raymond also advocated for clubs as a great way for students to become more familiar and capable in their classes, specifically citing his photography students’ involvement in the photography club. He also recommended checking out a camera for free from the library and taking pictures around campus, as a great way to open the door to experience in photography.
Getting involved with people who share your interests, such as through clubs, is important for both social and professional development. One way to find a club is to attend events such as K-Day which will be Friday, Sep. 11. Most student organizations will be in attendance, with members ready to explain their goals and passions. Michigan Tech’s website is another great way to browse the nearly 300 registered student organizations.
From swing dancing to theater, crafting scarves to figure skating, chances are that Michigan Tech has a way for you to show off your artsy side and build community, all the while having fun. To students incoming and returning, there is undoubtedly a club on-campus that’s just right for you.
