You might be wondering, how did Husky Miku come to be? Well, I happen to be best friends with the creator of Husky Miku. She completed a degree in animation game art at a community college downstate and came to Michigan Tech to complete a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

Their story starts with a joke, as many good things do. The artist, in an interview, said “So I am part of rhythm club and it was always a joke that Hatsune Miku is our mascot cause there is one guy that brought around a Hatsune Miku plushie. It’s our mascot because, you know, rhythm games – vocaloid. And so, someone went and said ‘What if someone made Hatsune Miku mixed with Blizzard T. Husky.’ I went BET and just started drawing. I made Hatsune Miku into Blizzard T. Husky, so now we have Husky Miku.”

When it was a sketch, she showed it to the members of the rhythm club. She went further into detail, “I said I would finish it and it took me three months to finish because I was just putting it off. I was like ‘I don’t really want to render this thing. I don’t know how I want to render this thing so I finally finished it, made stickers, and it’s been going around campus. I know that Northern has a sticker somewhere on a pole because someone in the club went there and said ‘I STUCK A STICKER ON A POLE!” Other locations included the FIRST Robotics competitions. The artist said “I just know someone gave one to a robotics team and they put the sticker on their robot. It was a funny thing for me to hear because they said ‘Yeah, we are giving out these stickers to like a lot of people,’ and so I go around campus and sometimes I see them on laptops or I’d see them on their phones, but I am like ‘I made that!” In total, she printed 80 stickers, though I wonder if more stickers were printed.

To get a wider understanding of the public’s opinion, I interviewed people around campus. A few people seemed repulsed, where one student called Husky Miku an abomination. Others were generally confused and didn’t seem to know Hatsune Miku. Another few people seemed to like her design, myself included. In the Makerspace, I asked two students who were working together on a 3D printing project. Student #1 said “Her eyes scare me but I love the concept! If her eyes were a little less scary – cover her eyes, giver her a little blindfold – she’s fucking perfect” Student #2 said “You know the difference between the Sonic the hedgehog first edition and second edition? It’s just – you need some whites in the eyes like the glisten sort of stuff. They just feel empty. It feels like it would be staring at me down the end of my hallway in the middle of the night saying ‘Come play with me!”

I would love it if we started a trend. Please, if you see Husky Miku, make a post about it and tag it #WeLoveHuskyMiku. You would make me happy.
