On Saturday Apr. 18, at 7:30 p.m., the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra (KSO) and Choirs of MTU will be presenting Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in celebration of the Rozsa Center’s 25th Anniversary Season. This event will be approximately 90 minutes in length with no intermission. Tickets are available at the Rozsa box office and the Student Rush discount applies for Michigan Tech students. Reserved tickets for this event start as $10 and are Pay As You’re Able.

This will be the largest symphony ever performed in the Rozsa Center and will combine the KSO, Choirs of Michigan Tech, musicians from the Upper Peninsula and Upper Midwest, and soloists Lara Neves and Kathryn Summersett for the Upper Peninsula’s first-ever performance of Gustav Mahler’s transcendent Resurrection Symphony. Joel Neves, Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral Activities at Michigan Tech, will be conducting this symphony.

In regards to the concert, Neves said, “The Mahler Resurrection Symphony, I think, is the G.O.A.T. of all symphonies, the greatest of all time.” Neves also said, ”The Resurrection Symphony is a life changer. If you’ve never been to a symphony before, this is the one to go to.”

Kiersten Birondo, Executive Director of the Rozsa Center, stated that, “With so much talent from across the Upper Peninsula coming together, this concert represents the kind of collaboration, coordination, trust, and willingness to build something together that makes our surrounding community and the Rozsa Center so special.”

The KSO, founded in 1971, is the oldest orchestra in the Upper Peninsula and is a college-community ensemble, composed of Michigan Tech students, faculty, and staff, in addition to community musicians.

When Madeline McRoberts, a Chemical Engineering student and cellist for the KSO, was asked what the KSO means to her she said, “The KSO is an incredible opportunity to play music in the Keweenaw. It brings together so many different people to play amazing pieces.”
