Event planning for next academic year underway
The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) held meetings on Wednesday, Apr. 1, at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Apr. 8, at 7 p.m., in the MUB Alumni Lounge.
Ford Schoonover, a Sophomore Mechatronics student at Michigan Tech, began his second term as the USG president. USG appointed three new representatives, Oliver Harris, Thomas Dahl, and Breanna Schlicker, who were all write-in candidates. David Reeves and Sydney Wieseler were sworn in as associate members, who will act as non-faculty advisors to the USG body.
In the Apr. 8 meeting, the returning representatives guided new members on Roberts Rules of Order, and introduced the new members to the different committees, liaisons and other ways USG advocates for and supports Michigan Tech students. While new members were getting acclimated, they were eager to contribute through speaking in the meeting and driving the conversation, already fulfilling their responsibility to advocate for their fellow students.

Tech Traditions liaison member Juan Sandoval Jr. stated, “the committee was looking at [including] a shuttle [to] include Hancock on [the] Afternoon on the Town.” Sandoval stated, “some people were opposed to it, but some people were ok with it just to make it easier for people to get there.” The Tech Traditions committee announced that the Winter Carnival theme for next year will be “Mysteries run cold, cryptid secrets unfold.”
Connor Skalitzky reported on an Ad-hoc committee and mentioned Blizzard’s Bargains, a program in the works, “is designed to highlight student discounts and encourage engagement in the community, without needing to break the bank.” Skalitzky continues with, “once I present to the Chamber of Commerce next week, a lot more content will be solidified about Blizzard’s Bargains.”
The next USG meeting will be held on Wednesday, Apr. 15, at 7 p.m. in the MUB Alumni Lounge. To access USG’s meeting minutes, visit usg.mtu.edu/documents.
