With the Spring Semester coming to an end, student move-out day in the residence halls is approaching. To make moving out smooth, here’s some important information. Michigan Tech students living in the residence halls must move out by noon on Saturday, Apr. 25. Students must also complete a checkout appointment with their RA at least 24 hours before leaving. RA sign-up sheets will be available on the RA’s door beginning Apr. 17. Students who do not complete a proper checkout will be charged a $50 improper checkout fee.
Students must return their room key and mailbox key to their RA during checkout. Failure to return a room key results in a $75 lock change fee, and a lost mailbox key adds a $10 charge.
Before scheduling with your RA, students need to complete some room preparation beforehand. Rooms must be emptied, cleaned, and returned to their original setup. Students must vacuum, empty trash cans, clean surfaces, remove tape and decorations, and return furniture to its original layout. Students who do not properly clean their rooms will face a minimum $100 cleaning fee.
Beds have to be properly lofted, with safety rails and loft pins in place. The residence hall front desk has extra loft pins. Hillside Place has specialty loft pins; those who need these pins can get them from the McNair front desk. Students with personal mini-fridges should defrost them at least 24 hours before move-out by unplugging the unit and leaving the door open. Any excess water should be dried from the fridge and floor before departure. Students should inspect their room for damage after cleaning and reorganizing, and report any concerns to their RA.
For students who need to remain on campus after halls close, late stay requests are limited to extenuating circumstances. The petition window runs from 9 a.m. Apr. 1 to 4 p.m. Apr. 20. Approved requests cost $30 per day, and MTU states that late stays for moving into another off-campus residence will not be approved.
Other deadlines also fall during the final week of the Spring Semester. The residence hall front desk will not accept outgoing packages after Wednesday, Apr. 22. Residence hall quiet hours will run from 11:59 p.m. Friday, Apr. 17, through noon Friday, Apr. 24.
Residents who do not want to throw away usable items can donate them through Husky Exchange from Apr. 17 through Apr. 25. Accepted items include small appliances, fans, lamps, storage items, clothing, non-perishable food, office supplies, and electronics. Donation drop-off sites will be available in Wadsworth Hall, McNair Hall, Douglass Houghton Hall, East Hall, and Hillside Place.
Individuals planning to take summer courses that need housing must submit a summer housing request form by 4 p.m. Apr. 20. A late stay petition must be submitted as well for those staying between Apr. 26 and May 3. Students with an approved summer housing contract will not be charged the daily late stay charge.
