Registration for the Indoor Triathlon opens soon, beginning Feb. 18 at 8:00 a.m. There is a 32 person capacity for this event, so if you are interested, be sure to register quickly. The Indoor Triathlon will take place on Wed. Apr. 1, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. at the SDC, and will last about two and a half hours, with all participants ending at 9:30 p.m. The registration will close on Mar. 24, but if the event reaches its capacity before you get the chance to register you will be put on a waitlist.
The Indoor Triathlon is free for all MTU students and SDC Access Pass Holders (with a minimum of three months). This is the fourth annual Indoor Triathlon hosted by Michigan Tech , and there will be a women’s and men’s division for this individual-based event. Ann Boyle, the Assistant Director of Recreation Aquatics and Fitness, emphasizes that, “anyone can participate no matter the skill level.” In previous years, the three events that have taken place were a ten minute swim, a 15 minute stationary bike ride, and then ten minute run. This year the stationary biking will be replaced with 15 minutes on a rowing machine instead. According to Boyle, “We swapped out biking to see how it goes, it’s a more full body exercise and it opens the event up to a different group of new participants.”
Unlike traditional triathlons that cover fixed distances, the Indoor Triathlon is a time based event. All participants start and end each heat at the same time and are scored based on the distance covered during that duration. Points are based on the distances traveled during each individual event. The person who travels the farthest gets one point, second gets two points and so on. While the goal is to travel the farthest distance in the set amount of time, the winner of the event is the person who scores the fewest points in their division (like golf). First place winners will receive a t-shirt and second place winners will receive an intramural sports cup. It is important to note that all participants must sign a liability waiver and concussion awareness forms prior to participation.
In addition to the Indoor Triathlon, other intramural sports registrations are closing soon.
