A space-themed carnival and downtown snowboarding highlight MTU’s spring start

As students return to campus for their 2026 Spring semester, the calendar is already packed with some of MTU’s most anticipated events. From the spectacle of Winter Carnival to downtown snowboarding and a mid-semester break, the early weeks promise to bring Huskies together.

This year’s Winter Carnival theme, “Through Ice and Snow To Space We Go!” promises a winter celebration with cosmic ambition. The festival, organized annually by Blue Key National Honor Society, will bring snow statues, broomball, sled-based games, and more to campus and the Keweenaw community. Blue Key President Andrew Hemstreet confirmed several new features for 2026: “Some of the new features that students can expect to see … include a drone show during the All-nighter, and a new Winter Game called Hungry Hungry Huskies.” The latter transforms the ice arena into a life-size version of the classic game students on sleds compete to collect balls with laundry baskets.

Hemstreet added that Blue Key is “very excited about our partnerships as they allow for more students to be involved … and provide more fun activities to check out during Winter Carnival.” Among the contributing groups this year are the Mushing Club, Audio Engineering Society, Swing Club, and Fishing Club. Notably, the Ice Fishing competition returns after a multi-year hiatus.

Just a week after Carnival concludes, the winter fun continues with the return of the Jibba Jabba Freestyle Snowboarding Competition. Scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m., the event transforms downtown Houghton into a snow-packed terrain park featuring rail-jam tricks, jumps, and crowds of spectators. Traditionally, Jibba Jabba attracts a lively turnout. In past years, Red Bull’s presence helped amplify the energy with music, giveaways, and a “party car”, often with free giveaways.

After the flurry of early-semester events, students will get a chance to recharge. Spring Break this year runs from Saturday, Feb. 28, through Sunday, Mar. 8. Whether heading home, traveling, or catching up on schoolwork, it marks a welcome pause before the semester picks back up.

With Winter Carnival, Jibba Jabba, and Spring Break all within the first six weeks, Spring 2026 continues to be a lively, snow-filled season at MTU.
