Cross-country ski season is back

The spring semester has arrived, and winter is in full swing, which means there is ample opportunity for snow sports. For many Tech students and Houghton residents, cross-country skiing is one of the best ways to embrace the winter. It is a fun way to stay active in the cold weather, and Tech Trails has 35km of skate and classic trails for all experience levels.

Cross-country skiing is a full-body workout. It engages almost every muscle group, including arms, back, shoulders, core, legs, and glutes. It is also a low-impact exercise, so it is a lot easier on your joints than other activities, such as running. Besides its physical health benefits, cross-country skiing is a great way to improve your mood in the winter months. Being out in nature and exercising is a great way to boost endorphins and maintain a happy mindset during the busy spring semester.

Cross-country skiing is very accessible to Tech Students. Students can rent ski equipment for the season through the Outdoor Adventure Program, and can access the trails for free. If you do not know how to ski, you can learn while earning a P.E. credit through the “Beginning Cross Country Skiing” class.

Seamus Barry, who is a member of the Michigan Tech Nordic Ski Club, has been skiing since he was four years old. “My favorite part of skiing is getting outside in the snow and winter and enjoying the weather.” He often skis at the Tech Trails, and his favorite trail is the “Down Under” loop, which is located on the lower trails.

If you are interested in renting ski gear, you can visit the Outdoor Adventure Program rental center at the Tech Trails trailhead, and if you are interested in joining the Nordic ski club, you can visit their page on the involvement link at involvement.mtu.edu.
