The Student Commission is a relatively unknown group at Michigan Technological University, but their impact is massive. They have introduced some of the most important changes to the university that affect students’  daily lives. A few of their more significant additions to the university have been mid-term surveys, student organization catering menus, installation of water-bottle filling stations, and encouraging a tobacco-free campus.

As of this year, the organization has been running for over 13 years with 23 members. Members consist of faculty from every department that affect students’ day-to-day lives. This includes members such as the Dean of Students, Transportation Services, Undergraduate Student Government (USG), and Dining Services. Currently, they are looking to fill vacant seats from the Graduate Student Government (GSG), MUB Board, USG, the Panhellenic Council, and Inter-Residence Housing Council.

They typically meet three times a year to discuss current events and what they can change to improve campus life. The Sep. 18 and Oct. 23 meetings have already happened. Here is a quick recap of this year’s more important events.

USG will be adding more storage space for RSOs in the body barn. IFC is looking for new e-board members; nominations are open till Nov. 4. Athletics and Recreation in the SDC is getting air conditioning. Transportation is adding a new parking lot located off Woodland Road, west of Wadsworth Hall; the price is one dollar per hour with 28 spaces for up to 24 hours.

The Student Commission group is very important to the successful operation of our school. Without them, the complaints of the students would not be recognized.
