Spirits were high at the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) meeting on Oct. 29 as representatives attended in their Halloween costumes.
The meeting started with Events Committee member Connor Din being awarded member of the week due to his hard work on the break bus project. The break bus was a large success this year, with the Lower Michigan bus selling out in under an hour and the Wisconsin bus selling out in three. USG is in contact with Lamers, working toward adding an additional bus.
Treasure David Reeves announced that there are open positions for students to volunteer to be on the committee for reviewing the upcoming Special Budgetary Group (SBG) hearings. For any students interested in representing the student body, there is a Google Form they can fill out. Applications are due Nov. 7.
It was also mentioned that the Husky Food Access Network (FAN) is hosting a Food and Security survey to help better understand the needs of the student body. Entering the survey automatically puts you into a raffle for a $10 MTU gift card. The survey closes Nov. 14.
The meeting then moved into Ways and Means requests, starting with the Fighting Game Club. Their original request was $1,316, but the allocation was lowered to $800. The request is to cover the cost for additional members to attend a tournament in Chicago called Frosting Foustings. After discussion, there was a motion to amend the allocation to $1,000 instead, due to the scale and importance of the event. That allocation failed 8-14-9, causing them to vote on the allocation of $800, which passed 30-0-1.
The next request was for $4,000 towards the Rowing Club for a new motor and safety equipment. $3,800 goes towards a replacement motor for their second safety boat, which would allow the club to have all of their members on the water at the same time. The other $200 will be going towards other safety equipment. The allocation passed 24-0-7.
A WAM request was voted upon for $450 towards the Husky Swimming Club. This money is going towards a hotel room for two of their members to attend a regional conference that could allow them to qualify for nationals. The allocation passed 28-0-3.
The final WAM request was for $6,000 towards the Alpine Ski Club. This would go towards the purchase of a trailer and the additional supplies they would need to modify it. They have currently been using another club’s trailer, which does not give them the freedom to be able to modify it. It was mentioned that improper storage of materials could slow them down during competitions. After a discussion about the longevity of the club due to the fact that this is a long-term purchase, the allocation passed 28-0-3.
