Behind the Buzz: clearing the air on substance use

Behind the Buzz is one of the many informative courses that Michigan Tech offers to students in order to raise awareness of many outside factors that the school doesn’t necessarily have control of. Michigan Tech offers many informative courses that students can attend to gain more knowledge on different topics, such as alcohol consumption, drug use, and more. Michigan Tech hosts many events like this because in the past, it has not engaged students much on substance use, so MTU Mental Health and Well-being is working to change that and help spread useful information to students.

Behind the Buzz is an informative course on substance use and misuse, how it affects the student performing the actions, and how it affects other students around them. In an interview with Em Humes, Michigan Tech’s Student Wellness and Engagement Coordinator, she explained how this event is “activity based” and how it’s “also very discussion oriented.” There is also a guest speaker who comes in to explain the subject further and discuss how to support yourself or a friend if anyone needs assistance.

The Behind the Buzz event is on Nov. 17 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the MUB Alumni Lounge. Any student who is interested in learning more about substance use can attend. The event is free, and there are no sign-up requirements for interested students. There will also be free pizza, prizes, and handouts promoting substance use information at the event. If you are interested in the event and are looking for more information, you can look on Involvement Link or the Student Scoop that is sent out every week.
