The Huskies football team traveled to the Superior Dome in Marquette to take on the Northern Michigan University Wildcats for the annual Miners Cup game Saturday afternoon. Tech dominated the field on all fronts, with 468 total yards that resulted in a blowout score of 56-17.
Tech led 14-3 up until the last 1:53 minutes of the second quarter, they decided to run the ball at their own 40 on fourth and one, resulting in a 60 yard touchdown. The play was made by Elliott Larner, the freshman third string quarterback, making it his second of the game giving Tech the upper hand with a lead of 21-3 going into half-time. Larner displayed a stellar performance on the field; he left the Dome with four total touchdowns and 172 total rushing yards.
The game only continued to ramp up, with Tech scoring three touchdowns on back to back possessions within the remaining half of the third quarter and the start of the fourth. Jake Rueff caught a 37 yard touchdown pass from Larner about three minutes into the third making it 28-3. The Wildcats managed to score with 6:18 minutes remaining in the third, however Tech fought for more, gaining yet another touchdown by Rueff before the start of the fourth with 35-10 on the board. Larner, Nic Nora, and Brady Isaacson brought in three more touchdowns for the Huskies all within the fourth quarter.
This will be the 15th consecutive Miners Cup win for Michigan Tech. Dave Ellis, a long time reporter for Marquette’s TV6 station, reflected on the years prior to Saturday’s win. “The very first starting quarterback for Michigan Tech to win it was Dan Mettlach. That’s how far back it goes. The current head coach was the first quarterback to win it.” With another cup under their belt, there is a good chance the energy will follow them to their next home game on Nov. 1 against Roosevelt.
