New USG representatives get their government on
Undergraduate Student Government (USG) welcomed new representatives to the team during the general body meeting on Sep. 24. This marks the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic that USG has seen a full government body on campus. Many new members expressed excitement as they shared their hopes for the future and what inspired them to get involved.
Kylie Kempen, a first-year Natural Resources Management major, will be representing the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (CFRES). Kempen is looking forward to staying involved with others on campus, along with helping individuals get involved with the CFRES community. “I’m really passionate about leadership. I think that going to a college that emphasizes engineering, it’s really important to be a voice for other colleges that may not be as well represented.”
Another new member, Jasper Gustafson, will be representing the fourth-years. Gustafson was “inspired by the support of other active members and the positive changes happening within the community…I want to give more support to fourth-years, especially when it comes to post-graduation options and opportunities.” Gustafson plans to graduate in the spring of 2027 with degrees in both Biochemistry and Human Biology. “I added a second degree to better prepare me for the next step of my career, which will hopefully be medical school.”
First-year Representative Wyatt Remar reflected on time spent at home, being surrounded by a supportive community, “My biggest inspiration for joining USG was from my friends back home.” Remar admired the involvement from his peers and wanted to channel the same energy into the Michigan Tech community. “As I come into Michigan Tech, I want to be as involved as possible. I want to do my best to help create a community where students feel involved and included.” Remar is pursuing a BS in Chemical Engineering and is “incredibly excited to be involved in USG!”
Once the meeting was adjourned, new members gathered in the MUB ballroom to socialize and participate in engaging activities, getting into the spirit of the opportunities that lie ahead in the new academic year. The full list of new members and their respective positions can be found on USG’s website at usg.mtu.edu/member-profiles, along with other information regarding each member.
