On Tuesday, Sep. 16, the Graduate Student Government (GSG) held its second general body meeting of the fall semester.
It is difficult for incoming graduate and transfer students to come to Houghton equipped with everything they need to survive. This is why GSG is hosting an item swap on Sep. 27 in the Daniell Heights activity room. From 8:00 a.m. until noon, participants will be able to drop off unused items and clothing. Then, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., others can come and sort through the donations. An online form will also be available to check if your item is good to donate. There will be a grace period between drop-off and pick-up, so people who donated will be allowed a first pick from the other donations. “This event is made for graduate students who might have come from overseas and only have the essentials like a chair, a desk, and a microwave. Students from overseas are unfamiliar with the climate, so getting them coats, boots, and ready for the winter is what this is all about,” said Lauren Sprague, President of GSG.
If you are worried about the transportation of a larger item to your home, there is a solution. GSG is partnering with Keweenaw Mutual Aid Collective. “They are an independent community organization that does skillshares, potlucks, and generally helps out the community. They will be providing help with transportation using their trucks,” said Lauren Sprague.
GSG presidential elections will be discussed and held at the next general body meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Chem Sci 102 at 5:15 p.m.
More information will be coming out in the next week, so make sure to stay updated on GSG’s website, gsg.mtu.edu/, or their Instagram, @mtugsg
