However, the fair is only the start of the job search process: much of the real opportunity begins after the event ends, and students should take proactive steps to turn brief interactions into lasting professional connections.
“The day of the fair is not the end of the exchange, it’s the beginning,” said Cody Kangas, Executive Director of Career Services at MTU. “Opportunities can emerge weeks or months later based on the impression you make.”
There are quite a few ways students can maintain newfound connections with employers after Career Fair. For instance, sending thank-you messages to the companies you spoke with can help set you apart from others, along with following up with them every few weeks. Students should also promptly check Handshake and company websites for posted positions and apply as soon as they open. Furthermore, keeping your resume updated with new projects and experiences will help to show all you have to offer to potential employers. Setting reminders can help you remember to do these small but important tasks.
“Employers notice and appreciate candidates who follow up consistently,” said Kangas. “It shows genuine interest and professionalism beyond just asking for a job.” Staying informed about company news and maintaining active LinkedIn profiles can also help students speak knowledgeably in interviews and communications, Kangas added.
Beyond one’s own efforts to stay connected with employers, Career Services has several other resources and events for students seeking to build their skills, including resume workshops and networking events. They also offer individual appointments for one-on-one advising.
Taking these steps can help students build a strong network and improve their chances of securing employment long after the fair is over. “Staying engaged is crucial,” said Kangas.
