Parking on campus: How To

Is this your first semester having a car on campus? If so, follow along to avoid getting a parking citation!

Register your vehicle

If you want to park anywhere on campus, you must register your vehicle with Transportation Services first. You can do this by visiting the Michigan Tech Parking Portal at https://mtuparking.t2hosted.com/Account/Portal or by bringing your vehicle registration information to the Transportation office in the Admin building.

Permits and meters

A variety of parking permits are available for students to purchase on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking permit options include residential, Daniell Heights, general commuter, guaranteed commuter, and general parking permits. You can explore permit options and which lots they are associated with by visiting the “Parking and permits” tab of the Transportation Services website at https://www.mtu.edu/transportation.

You can also park at the parking meters located throughout campus for $.25/15 minutes or by paying via the ParkMobile app. This is a good option if you do not want to purchase a parking pass or if you wish to park somewhere other than the lot your permit is assigned to. However, parking at the meters is never guaranteed, so plan accordingly. “Parking meters are really convenient if they are open because you can park close to the building you need to go into. However, if you drive your car to campus and are banking on being able to park at a meter, there might not be any parking spots left, and you might end up being late to class,” says Emma Hampton, a 4th-year Michigan Tech student who has been parking on campus for 3 years now.

Night ban

It is important to note that the campus-wide night parking ban will take effect from November 1st through April 30th. When in effect, parking on campus is prohibited between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. Residential housing students, employees, and visitors with an approved special overnight parking permit are exempt from the night parking ban.

If you do get a parking citation, you can pay it by visiting the MTU Parking Portal. For more information about parking on campus, please visit the MTU Transportation Services website.
