The Parade of Nations, which has showcased the Keweenaw’s diversity by representing around 55 countries with flags and handmade floats for over 35 years, starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, beginning at Tech’s library and ending at the Dee Stadium in downtown Houghton. This event is free for anyone and everyone. Participants are encouraged to walk alongside the parade or watch from the sidelines. Organizers are encouraging people to arrive before 10:45 a.m. if they plan to march in the event. People can request their country to be represented by filling out a Flag Request Form, which is accessible at: https://www.mtu.edu/international/get-involved/parade-nations/parade/. One flag and sign per nation.
The Multicultural Festival will take place from noon to 3 p.m. in the Dee Stadium. The event has food booths from eight different student organizations. Each booth has its own collection of dishes, such as bandari with sausage, chicken tandoori with roohafza, tacos, and chicken samosas. Vegetarian dishes are also offered, like vegetable momo, deem vuna, veggie bandari, and piyaju. Additionally, drinks and desserts such as horchata or baklava with Persian tea are available for purchase. The prices vary by booth; however, there is free entertainment from seven live acts, including Frozen Squid Comedy, Husky Tae Kwon Do & Keweenaw Korean Martial Arts, and performances by the Indian Student Organization. “You know, I think it’s important to come out and see the event, it really is such a great time,” said Christian Montesinos, Primary Designated School Official. “I really love seeing the spirit of the students. That’s probably what my absolute favorite thing is.”
The float competition is back with the theme, ‘games around the world’. There is a chance for any registered float to win prize money. First place gets $350, second place wins $250, and third place wins $150. All floats entered must complete a float application. Tech organizations will receive $100 of grant money towards their float after their application is accepted. When asked about the application, Montesinos said, “we require the information of who the community organization or member is and then a brief description of the float so that we can vet it to ensure that it complies with the theme.” Float participants may hand out candy; however, throwing candy at guests is not allowed. The float application is available at the same website as the flag request form.
