Waterfalls of the Keweenaw

Due to the recent snowmelt in the Keweenaw Peninsula, nearby waterfalls are in their prime with roaring spring waters. Within an hour of the Houghton, many hiking trails and parks have beautiful falls that weave into the rugged landscape. Hikers, nature enthusiasts, and students looking for a study break can easily access many of these locations and immerse themselves in the Keweenaw’s most iconic sites. Three exceptionally beautiful waterfalls that are perfect for a springtime outing are Hungarian Falls, Canyon Falls, and Eagle River Lower Falls. It is important to note that there are limited safety features (or none) at the following locations to prevent slips, trips, and falls.

Nestled in Hubbell, a 15-minute drive from Houghton, is Hungarian Falls. Hungarian Falls boasts three breathtaking waterfalls along the hiking path: Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls. Once at the river, hiking upstream will bring you to Upper Falls. Upper Falls has unique rock cascades and cool pools of water underneath. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the falls from above or get close to action near the base. Going downstream will bring you to the Middle and then Lower Falls. Middle Falls is the shortest of the bunch, but still consists of impressive water movement. Lower Falls is the tallest of the three waterfalls and is surrounded by gorgeous views of the area.

Just past Alberta on Highway 41, a roadside park called Canyon Falls hosts another stellar waterfall. Canyon Falls consists of an easily accessible hike with lots of walking bridges and railings near the falls. Canyon Falls is also a popular spot for people to participate in cliff jumping. While the water is too cold for that in March, there is always something to see at Canyon Falls.

Further north in the Keweenaw Peninsula is Eagle River Lower Falls. The falls are visible from M-26, but parking is available to stop and take in the beauty. Viewers can exit their vehicles and walk along the bridge that spans across the river to enjoy the falls. Unique rock formations and old industrial infrastructure make these falls a fun visit.
