Sidelines: Post-Career Fair blues

So, Career Fair didn’t work out quite as well as you hoped, eh? Maybe you misspelled your major on your resume, or just plain overslept. Since the Career Fair goes until 5 p.m. this year, that would be an accomplishment.

Whatever your reason, despair not! There are still plenty of opportunities to score that internship, co-op or fulltime job.

For any doubters, this is definitely a sport. First, it’s competitive. Only one person is getting that internship you’ve been eyeing, and if this is where you’re getting the bulk of your career advice, it might not be you.

Second, you sweat. It gets hot with that many people in the SDC, especially in dress clothes. Competitive sweaty things are sports, ergo job hunting is a sport.

Anyway, opportunities. Career Services is your best friend here. Believe it or not, they do go on existing in between career fairs. In fact, they have a number of resources for Michigan Tech students both online and in person.

One of the most useful tools for any Michigan Tech student is Handshake, which is the updated, more functional version of HUSKYJobs. You can input career interests and it will search through posted job offerings based on criteria you select.

You can also find events on campus, read helpful guides in the resource library and make appointments with career advisors.

The career advisors have a wealth of experience that you can benefit from. When you schedule an appointment, you can choose from a variety of different options to focus your discussion on areas where you need the most help.

Career advisors also have walk-in hours, but they can be pretty busy, especially after Career Fair. The DTE Career Services Learning Center has student counselors equipped with resources to help you out, and can at least get you on the right path. You can set up an appointment on Handshake or come to walk-in hours.

Your biggest asset or liability here is your willingness to get out there. It can be hard and scary, but more than 90 percent of Tech students get placed within six months of graduation; you can definitely do it. Will you?
