Tech basketball beats SVSU at Senior Night

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team beat the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals 82-57 on senior day Saturday afternoon. The men’s basketball team also beat the Cardinals on senior day, winning 66-60.

The women’s team kept SVSU to just nine points in the first quarter and continued to dominate throughout the game. “I thought we had an excellent performance today,” Head Coach Kim Cameron commented, “We came out strong. I thought we were steady, and Kelli [Guy]’s shooting really helped to get us through the first half and ignited our offense. The part we paid most attention to in the first half was our defense and to hold a high scoring team like Saginaw Valley State to a single digit quarter was huge. That set the tone for the game and I was happy with how we finished it.”

Senior guard Morgan Anderson led the Huskies with 20 points and went eight for eight at the free throw line. Four more points and Anderson will reach 1,000 career points. Junior guard Kelli Guy tallied 18 points for the Huskies and sank six of eight shots from behind the three-point line.

Sophomore forward Isabella O’Brien and junior guard Brenna Heise led the team in rebounds, each with nine. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Kelliher added three blocks to the day and now leads the GLIAC in blocks.

The Huskies men’s basketball team swept the Cardinals this season allowing them to secure a spot in the GLIAC Tournament. The Huskies are now second in the GLIAC North Division standings. The Huskies were neck and neck with the Cardinals throughout most of the game but were able to get the upper hand at the end of the game. “The first thought that comes to my mind is of the seniors,” Huskies head coach Kevin Luke commented, “We got to play at home on Winter Carnival in front of a nice crowd and I’m really proud of this group of seniors for hanging on and coming through for us in big situations. It was a grind it out game and credit goes to Saginaw; they played hard and were tough.

Credit to our defense too because I thought they were really good down the stretch and in the second half in particular.” Sophomore guard Bryan Heath led the Huskies with 18 points followed closely by senior guard Jordan Chartier with 16.

Sophomore forward Kyle Monroe led the team with eight rebounds. Freshman guard Tommy Lucca boasted seven assists for the day. The Huskies go back on the road Thursday, Feb. 16 to take on the Grand Valley State University Lakers in another GLIAC game. The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team is tied for second in the GLIAC North Division Standings with the Lakers. The women’s game will begin at 6 p.m. and the men’s at 8 p.m.
