On-campus barbershop

Michigan Technological University offers many non-academic resources, one of them being the pop-up barbershop on campus. This barbershop benefits students who have difficulty finding a barber or who don’t have easy access to the off-campus barber shops. Hair care services for all hair textures are available for all students. The “barbershop” can be found inside the Michigan Tech Wood Gym during designated times. The pop-up barbershop is open twice a month during September, October, November, February, March, and April, and is normally open at least once during December and January. Appointments are available online on the squire.com and the Squire app. Walk-ins are limited.

The MTU campus barber shop officially opened in January of 2021 through a collaboration with Student Affairs, the Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion (now known as the Office of Diversity and Inclusion), and Athletics and Recreation. When asked about what brought on this project, the Assistant Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion at Michigan Tech, Christopher Sanders, says, “The intent of the barbershop is to meet a need for students with textured hair that is not being met by the community. Appointments are usually sold out, but limited walk-in appointments may be available”.

Michigan Tech continues to provide resources with the purpose of promoting inclusion, all while making its students’ lives easier. To make an appointment, download the Squire App or email the Center for Diversity and Inclusion at cdi@mtu.edu for the weblink.
