Standing against domestic violence: A Mile in Her Shoes

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. outside of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI), the Student Leadership and Involvement (SLI), CDI, and Society of African American Men (SAAM) are partnering up to host an annual campus tradition. A Mile in Her Shoes is an international event where participants walk a mile to raise awareness of domestic violence and speak out against it. You can either walk a mile in your own shoes or grab a pair of high heels to really immerse yourself in the mile walk. You can also make signs to show who or what you will be walking for.

The student organizations that are organizing the event will be asking for donations for the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter. This can be in the form of cash or gifts, including baby and women hygiene products, household essentials, and Tadych’s Marketplace receipts.

The event, starting eight years ago, has seen a rocky start. Previously held near the Rozsa, the location has been moved to the CDI due to lack of attention and student traffic. This event also allows students to be recruited by different organizations that have been defunct, including the Society of African American Men and Students Against Violating the Environment.

Dawn Corwin, one of the many event organizers, believes this year will be a good turnout for the event, especially with the new location. Corwin comments, “This event is supposed to raise awareness, it allows those victims to be seen and to bring a voice to them.” A Mile in Her Shoes is hosted every October because that is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Other people heading the event include Chris Sanders who is a part of the CDI, as well as Danielle Meirow, the head of Student Involvement. For more information contact dlmeirow@mtu.edu
