On Aug. 31 2023 the Husky volleyball team kicked off their season at home against the Winona State Warriors. After five hard-fought sets, the Huskies fell to the Warriors 3-2.

With a vibrant gym full of fans, students, and the pep band, the girls started the game strong in the first set, with a 25-16 Husky win. The Warriors answered in the second set, beating the Huskies 25-17. The next set remained close, finishing with the Huskies on top 25-22. Again, the Warriors fought back, winning the fourth set 25-19. Going into the final set, the Huskies started strong, leading the Warriors 8-6. Switching sides, the Warriors tied it up and eventually took the set 15-13.

“I think we left our hearts on the court and we played really well together for our first time,” said Tess Hayes, the team’s starting freshman setter, during a post game interview. She also noted that the “environment was fantastic with the entire pep band.” Hayes had 49 assists throughout the game.

In addition to Hayes’s assists, sophomore Makena Wesol and senior Lindy Oujiri led the team with 15 kills. Senior libero Kate Walch racked up 24 digs.

The Huskies left promptly after the game to compete in the Northern Michigan tournament the following two days. There they will face Concordia-St. Paul, Minnesota Crookston and Hillsdale. The Huskies take the home court again on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. against the Grand Valley State Lakers. More information can be found on the Michigan Tech women’s volleyball website.
