Not every student organization on campus can say they have presidential influence, but the newly-formed group Young Yeezys of America (YYA) can. The club, essentially a group of fans of the rapper and current American president, was formed shortly after President Kanye West was inaugurated and took residency in the “Ye House,” once known as the White House.
“We just think President Ye is so cool,” says Edward Cullen, founding member and president of the club, who now goes by Ward due to the president’s influence. YYA’s mission is clear by their motto, a quote from the president himself: “My greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform live.”
“YYA is where I’ve met some of the best, most brightest, most talented people on campus, and by that I mean myself,” says Bella “La” Swan, the only female member of the group.
Public Outreach Chairperson and Yeezy #2, Jacob “Ob” Black, says that his favorite part of the group is the friends he’s made along the way. “It’s like I’ve finally found my own wolf pack.”
Group activities include hating Taylor Swift even though she deserves the world (stream Folklore now), rap battles, t-shirt designing contests and running for positions in other student organizations and the local government that they have no business running for.
The club isn’t all about fun and games, however—they also donate to the local community. They teach older community members to rap at nursing homes and sell overpriced shoes to children at Houghton Elementary School.
