The Houghton County Sheriff Department investigated a 2-vehicle personal injury accident March 12 at 2:30 p.m. The accident occurred on Superior Road at the intersection of Elsie Road in Portage Township.
A vehicle being driven by Trent Nordstrom, 17 of Baltic failed to properly yield at the posted intersection on Elsie Road driving in a 1993 Chevy truck. A Bacco Construction dump truck towing a pup trailer was travelling southbound on Superior Road. The dump truck was driven by Tom St. Pierre, 57 of Manistique. The Bacco Construction dump truck was unable to avoid striking Nordstrom at the intersection as Nordstrom pulled out in front of the dump truck.
The dump truck pushed the pickup truck into the northbound snow bank which caused serious damage to the pickup driver’s side. The driver of the truck was trapped in the truck and had to be extricated by the Hurontown Fire Department Jaws of Life. Nordstrom was treated at the scene by Adams Twp First Responders and Mercy Ambulance where he was then transported to Portage Health Systems with serious injuries.
The sheriff department was assisted at the scene by the Houghton City Police Department, Michigan State Police, Adams Twp First Responders, Mercy Ambulance Hurontown Fire Department and Superior Service Towing.
Neither alcohol nor speed were believed to be factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
