Hawking and others to speak in Norway

The renowned physicist Professor Stephen Hawking at Cambridge University is the keynote speaker at the “STARMUS FESTIVAL IV: Life and the Universe” to be held at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in Trondheim, Norway. STARMUS was established to “celebrate science and the arts with the goal of bringing an understanding and appreciation of science to the public at large.”

Next year’s festival will take place from June 18-23, 2017. According to the organizers, “Starmus IV is going to be the biggest Starmus festival yet: an international star-studded gathering of scientists, artists, musicians, writers, business leaders and more; all coming together to celebrate science. It will be an exciting festival of talks, concerts, debates, parties, and learning.”

In addition to Steve Hawking, other speakers at the festival will include the American geologist, retired NASA astronaut, university professor and former U.S. senator from New Mexico, Harrison Schmitt, Susumu Tonegawa, 1987 recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his “discovery of the genetic mechanism that produces antibody diversity,” Sol Alan Stern, an American engineer and planetary scientist who is also “the principal investigator of the New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Chief Scientist at Moon Express;” and Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, RDI, popularly known as Brian Eno. Eno is an English musician, composer, record producer, singer, writer and visual artist.

The other speakers are Astronauts Walter ‘Walt’ Cunningham, Charlie Duke and Alexei Leonov, astrophysicist and Nobel Laureate Adams Riess, astrophysicist Till Tarter, neuroscientist, Nobel Laureate and NTNU professor Edvard Moser, physicist and Nobel Laureate Robert Wilson,  and Neuroscientist and Nobel Laureate  May-Britt Moser.

Previous STARMUS FESTIVALS were held in the Canary Islands and this fourth event will take the festival to Trondheim, the thrilling scientific capital of Norway. “After three successful festivals in The Canary Islands, it is an honor to be invited to the scientific capital of Norway, Trondheim, to expand Starmus and reach even greater heights,” said Garik Israelian, founder of STARMUS. According to organizers “the festival will expand from audiences of 1000 to audiences of 10,000 plus. Stephen Hawking will present to his largest audience ever.”   The STARMUS board consists of Stephen Hawking, Brian May, Peter Gabriel, Richard Dawkins, Alexei Leonov, Robert Williams, David Eicher, Jack Szostak and the festival’s founder, Garik Israelian.
