Michigan Tech will be hosting its annual New Music in the Mine on Sep. 30 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Oct. 1at 6 p.m. in the Quincy Mine Hoist House. The event features 24 conScience: Michigan Tech Chamber Singers who will be performing New Music, a modern style of classical music with a focus on creative and innovative musical ideas. New Music in the Mine also features solos from soprano Kathryn Summersett, cellist Adam Hall, and modular synthesizer player Michael G. Maxwell, as well as performance from Michigan State University’s Electronic Workshop.
“I have the honor of conducting the conScience Chamber Singers,” said Jana Meckler, an instructor in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.“We are performing all jazz and gospel this semester. The students are thriving in this medium. We have collectively created an a cappella arrangement of ‘Chant’ from Hadestown and will premiere the arrangement at the Music in the Mine concerts at both shows. conScience will perform two other jazz works on these programs. We are excited to perform in the incredibly reverberant Hoist House.”
The historic Quincy Mine Hoist House has become a defining feature of the annual event. Soloist Michael G. Maxwell stated, “New Music in the Mine is an exceptionally unique performance to Michigan Technological University and the Keweenaw. The relationship between the Department of Visual and Performing Arts and the Quincy Mine Hoist Association makes this stellar experience possible. Whether it is soloists or ensembles, the Hoist House at the Quincy Mine offers an incredible natural reverberation and the intimate setting with a relatively small audience is just so great every year.”
Michigan State University’s Electronic Workshop will also be making a trip up from Lansing to perform in the annual New Music in the Mine. This is a collaborative and unique event involving the Huskies and Spartans. This concert requires hard hats which will be provided. Closed toe shoes, and warm clothes are also recommended.
