Michigan Tech provides a variety of services, including parking permits, shuttle services, and vehicle rentals for university related business. Transportation Services is located in the Administration Building in room 100. Their office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. during academic sessions. Over the summer, multiple parking lots on-campus were reclassified. For changes that impact students, Lower Lot 17, behind Wadsworth, has been reclassified from Residential to Commuter. Lot 10E, to the East of East Hall, has been reclassified from Residential to Commuter; Lot 10W will continue to act as a Flex Lot, which is normally classified as Commuter. Lot 26, on Seventh Avenue, has been reclassified from Commuter to Residential. Lot 24, South of the Student Development Complex, was reclassified from Residential to Commuter. Lastly, for students, Lot 5 between Rozsa and East Hall has been reclassified from Guaranteed Commuter (purple permit) to Faculty/Staff.
Other campus changes include Lot 27, next to the Admin Building, which has been converted from meters to Faculty/Staff. To compensate for the loss of metered parking across campus over the year, Lot 12 below the MUB and the Library has been converted from Faculty/Staff to meters. After the demolition of the Hamar House, 54 new Faculty/Staff spots have been added to Lot 14. Over the coming weeks, Lot 11 between Admin and the MUB will slowly be phased out, as the area will serve as the build site for the Chang K. Park Center for Student Wellness.
For online parking resources such as parking permits, ticket payment, and up-to-date vehicle information, visit the Michigan Tech Parking Portal at mtuparking.t2hosted.com/Account/Portal. Login using your Tech username and password. Many students who live on campus purchase an academic year parking pass. Any vehicle on campus must be registered with Transportation Services and have a permit. When applying for a parking permit, students join a waitlist for the lot they want. This waitlist process opened Jul. 15. Depending on your completed earned credits and position in the waitlist, students will be able to get specific lots. If you live in a dorm, you may not receive parking permits next to that dorm. Additionally, you can buy daily or weekly parking passes for visitors.
Another option is to park in designated parking areas and pay the parking fee via meters or ParkMobile. The meters only accept quarters while ParkMobile requires initial setup with your car and banking information. Designated parking areas are enforced from 7 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This allows students to park in facility designated areas after 5 p.m. but not in the residential areas. In the winter months, from Nov. 1 through Apr. 30, parking is prohibited on campus between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. The Night Parking Ban is enforced for street parking in Houghton and Hancock as well, for snow removal. Transportation Services sends out emails and posts notices in residence halls at least 24 hours in advance when lots are going to be cleared. It is the responsibility of vehicle owners to be aware of these notices and move their vehicles accordingly to avoid being ticketed and/or towed.
During the academic year, Transportation Services provides shuttle services around campus and throughout Houghton and Hancock free of charge to students, faculty, and staff using three main shuttle routes: Husky Campus Shuttle, City Commuter Shuttle, and Hancock Commuter Shuttle. All shuttle routes and schedules can be found at mtu.edu/transportation/options/shuttle/. Riders are encouraged to arrive at the shuttle stop five minutes prior to the departure time. The TripShot Rider app is used to update and provide users with information. Some of the features include shuttle schedules, routes, and cancellations due to vehicle issues or inclement weather.
Biking is another common transportation mode for students in the non-winter months. Bike racks are found at many building entrances. Lock use is encouraged to ensure the safety of your bicycle while unattended. Public Safety and Police Services offers free bicycle registration for all students, faculty, and staff. Registration helps ensure that bikes found without owners can be returned to the proper person. Students who live in residence halls can store their bikes in hall storage over the winter. Most residence halls offer seasonal bike storage, including Wadsworth, McNair, and Douglass Houghton Hall; East Hall residents are encouraged to use the enclosed bike shed outside the main entrance. Bike repair stations are located at various locations across campus.
