Cornhole Club showcases casual athleticism with a Midwest flair

Michigan Tech is home to over 200 registered student organizations, ranging from cultural groups, academics, sports, and hobbies. Some groups can fit into multiple of those categories, such as the Cornhole Club, which provides an outlet for students to participate in a multiplayer sport while also serving as a relaxing pastime.

The club was created in 2023 by Coralee Daugherty, who is currently a third-year Accounting student. When she recognized the opportunity to bring the sport to Michigan Tech, she said, “What got me interested in creating this club was being able to share a part of Midwest tradition with Michigan Tech. I was shocked to learn there was no cornhole club established, so I took it upon myself to create this org.” The creation of Cornhole Club is a project that has been in the works for a while. Daugherty said, “This is a club that I created entirely myself, and was a project that I had been working on since my Freshman year. Now I have an amazing crew to help make my goal a reality.” Daugherty now serves as the President of the club.

Becky Etten, a second-year Engineering Management major, serves as Vice President of the club. Etten has worked with Daugherty to find ways to make improvements to the club and re-engage the student body. Etten says, “I have always loved playing cornhole because I grew up constantly playing in family tournaments. When I got to Tech and saw that a Cornhole Club was starting, I was excited to say the least.”

Members speak fondly of the club, with Daugherty saying, “I love the sport because of the people, the memories, and the friendships made from it.” Conner Skalitzky, a second-year Engineering Management major, serves as the treasurer of the club. He cites his first Cornhole Club meeting as his favorite cornhole memory. Since the Cornole Club is a newer organization, adjustments are still being made this semester to find a good scheduling routine. Starting next semester, the Cornhole Club will have regular meetings twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays from 7 p.m to 9 p.m. Students of all skill levels are invited to join the club and participate in tournaments, practice days, educational meetings, or even to just stop by and hang out.

The Cornhole Club has recently launched an Instagram account, @cornholeatmtu. They invite students to stay tuned for upcoming events. The club has recently made a post introducing their executive board members for the 2026-2027 school year. Students are also encouraged to check out Cornhole Club on the MTU Involvement link: involvement.mtu.edu/organization/cornhole. Students interested in joining the club should reach out to Daugherty at cddaughe@mtu.edu.
