Michigan Tech Recreation is hiring student counselors for its upcoming Youth Hockey Camps, offering paid training, competitive hourly wages, and other perks throughout the month of July.
The camps will run in four week long sessions from Jul. 5 through Jul. 31, with counselors working between 30 and 40 hours per week. Participants will be paid $15 per hour, with paid training scheduled for Jul. 1 and 2. In addition to wages, staff will receive dining hall meals during shifts, pizza, concessions, and MTU branded apparel including hats, hoodies, and t-shirts.
The hockey camps serve three age groups; six to nine, nine to 12, and 12 to 15 years old. Each week includes a structured schedule of on ice skill development, recreational activities, classroom sessions, and outdoor adventures. Meals are provided at the Wadsworth Dining Hall.
Counselors play a huge role in the hockey camp experience, guiding groups of campers through daily activities while ensuring safety and maintaining a positive environment for everyone. Responsibilities of a counselor include enforcing rules, monitoring camper behavior, leading by example, and participating in recreational events.
There are multiple counselor shifts available. For younger campers, two counselors are needed for morning shifts, Monday through Thursday, with shorter hours on Fridays. For older groups, two shifts are offered: one being a morning to afternoon shift running from Sunday afternoons through early afternoons during the week, and an afternoon to evening shift extending into the evening hours.
The camps are hosted by Michigan Tech Recreation and led by coaching staff, with support from student-athletes and counselors. Students interested in applying are encouraged to contact camp coordinator Jada Gullstrand via email at jmgullst@mtu.edu or visit the SDC 202B office for more information.
