Internship and entry level job market tightens for new graduates

Recent college graduates and current college students who are seeking internships and full-time jobs are facing a competitive and uncertain job market as shifting employer expectations create new barriers.

Across multiple industries, companies have reduced internship and co-op slots and entry level hiring in response to economic changes, including inflation and cautious corporate spending. As a result of this, students are submitting more applications than ever, while receiving fewer responses. Career services offices at universities report a noticeable rise in student anxiety regarding the job search process.

One of the major challenges is the growing expectation for lots of prior experience, even for entry-level jobs. Many employers now prefer candidates who have completed multiple internships or co-ops, leaving first-time applicants at a disadvantage. In addition to that, some companies have replaced internships with short-term contract roles, which lack stability and benefits.

The rise of applicant tracking systems has also made it harder for candidates to stand out. These systems filter resumes before a human ever reviews them, which means that qualified applicants may be overlooked due to formatting issues or missing keywords within their resume. Networking has also become increasingly important with many positions being filled through referrals rather than open job postings.

Despite these difficult challenges, experts encourage college students to remain proactive in building skills, gaining certifications, and highlighting personal projects within their resume. These things can help strengthen applications. Additionally, attending career fairs, leveraging connections, and tailoring resumes for each role are key strategies. While the job market presents obstacles, it is not without opportunity. Employers continue to seek lots of motivated candidates who demonstrate problem-solving abilities. Which means for many students and graduates, persistence will be critical in landing a role.
