A change in coaching staff for the Miami Dolphins has put MTU alumnus Bobby Slowik, biomedical engineer 2009, at the helm of the team’s offensive leadership. In mid-February, Slowik accepted a promotion to lead the team as Offensive Coordinator into the 2026 season. This represents the culmination of a 12 year rise through the professional coaching ranks. Previously, Slowik has worked as the Senior Passing Game Coordinator for Miami in the 2025 season, as well as a number of other teams in the NFL.
Slowik is an incredibly involved individual within the football field, coming from a family with an equally impressive presence at the professional level. “Bobby comes from a family that eats, sleeps, and breathes football,” said former teammate and current Huskies Assistant Head Coach and Special Teams Coordinator, Phil Milbrath. Slowik’s father spent years as a defensive coordinator in the NFL and now coaches in the Canadian Football League. Additionally, his younger and older brothers both built careers in the NFL, including roles with the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets, respectively.
During Slowik’s MTU football career, he was a wide receiver for the Huskies for three seasons from 2005 to 2008, while working towards his degree in biomedical engineering. “He also wanted to go into coaching and still decided to get a degree in engineering so he could challenge himself and get every ounce out of Michigan Tech’s education that he could,” said Milbrath.
During his time on the team, Slowik started ten games, but his legacy at Tech was never defined by statistics. Slowik’s work ethic and detail-minded approach to football is what he is most known for by his teammates. “His knowledge of why we were doing certain things, and the attention to detail on even the simplest things were unlike anything that I had experienced to that point,” said Milbrath, “Even when things aren’t always looking the brightest, or if things are stacked against him, Bobby is going to over-achieve.” This attitude will undoubtedly translate into his work as Offensive Coordinator, as the Miami Dolphins have chosen an individual shaped by the effort it takes to be a student athlete and engineer at Michigan Tech.
