There will be a variety of home varsity sporting events during Winter Carnival.
On Thursday, Feb. 5, there will be a basketball doubleheader. The women’s basketball team will be facing off against Lake Superior State Lakers at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s basketball team also playing the Lakers at 7:30 p.m. This will be the women’s basketball team’s second time facing off against the Lakers this season after defeating them 68-57 on Jan. 17. Tech’s men’s basketball team will also be playing the Lakers for their second time this season after defeating them 84-83 on Jan. 17.
Then, on Saturday, Feb. 7, both women’s and men’s basketball will face off against the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively. This will be Tech’s second time facing off against the Saginaw Valley State women’s basketball team after defeating them on Jan. 15 with a score of 59-40. This will also be the men’s basketball team’s second time playing the Cardinals after defeating them 80-78.
As of Jan. 29, the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team is ranked first in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and ranked sixth in NCAA Division II according to a National Association of Basketball Coaches poll. The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team is ranked fifth in the GLIAC, while Lake Superior State’s men’s and women’s basketball team are both ranked ninth.
On Friday, Feb. 6, at 7:07 p.m., Michigan Tech will be facing off against the Augustana Vikings in the first hockey game of the Winter Carnival series. This will be followed up by hockey at 5:07 p.m., where Tech will again take the ice against the Augustana Vikings for the final game of the Winter Carnival series in hopes of claiming the MacInnes Cup. This will be the Vikings’ first time competing for the MacInnes trophy. They have an all-time record of 1-2-1 against the Huskies.
The Michigan Tech men’s hockey team ranks third in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and 19th nationally, according to the U.S. Hockey Online (USCHO) poll, while the Augustana Vikings hockey team ranks second in the CCHA and 16th nationally.
