The reception for “Women’s Rights are Human Rights” will be taking place Friday, Jan. 30, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Rozsa Art Gallery. The exhibit will run from Friday, Jan. 30, to Saturday, Mar. 28. The Rozsa Art Galleries are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. Admission is free and open to the public.
“The artworks being featured are from a larger collection of international posters created to address the subject of gender inequality, discrimination, and gender-based violence,” said Rozsa Gallery Director and Exhibit Curator Terri Frew. “The posters shown were created by international artists and designers, from such various places as Bolivia, France, the United Arab Emirates, [the United States of America], Egypt, Poland, Greece, Iran, Jamaica, and Canada. The posters in [the] showing range from 1999-present.”
The title of the exhibit was a term used in the women’s rights movement and was the title of Hillary Clinton’s speech in 1995 at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. The featured posters were created by artists of all genders to celebrate and acknowledge the vital role that everyone plays in protecting and promoting human rights. Many challenge gender stereotypes and inequality, in hopes of advancing reproductive rights, protecting women against brutality, and empowering women.
For the exhibit, 25 posters were selected from the larger collection of approximately 125 posters curated by Elizabeth Resnick, Professor Emerita, and Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Frew chose these selections with the local audience in mind. “Posters, and the image in general, can indeed be powerful tools for social commentary. I hope that visitors walk away with a greater appreciation for the poster as a medium for social change, and that viewers are brought further into the feminist conversation being supported by this collection.”
A Certain Rage, a feminist rock band, will be playing a set in the Rozsa Lobby from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. Contact the Rozsa Box Office for more information.
