The Graduate Student Government (GSG) with Women in Physics and the MTU Well Being Team is hosting an event called Mindfulness with YoGeeta, this Thursday, Jan. 29, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Library’s East Reading Room. Anyone is welcome to attend this free event for a shared learning and meditative experience.
The event will begin with a presentation by Amanda Schwass, MTU Clinical Counselor, on how to mindfully mitigate burnout. Following the talk will be a gentle yoga flow and mindful breathing guided by Geeta Nain, GSG Professional Development Chair. Lastly, Schwass will lead a mindfulness meditation. “It is recommended that [attendees] stay for the entire event. It’s more of a journey, though they are welcome to join anytime if they only have time for one portion of the event,” said Dhanush Biligiri, GSG Professional Development Committee Member. Students, staff, faculty, and community members of all skill levels are welcome. Yoga mats will be provided; however, participants are welcome to bring their own. The space will be set with relaxing music during the yoga flows. The event will take place during a typically low-traffic time in the Library.
“True professional growth extends beyond technical expertise. It requires emotional balance, mental clarity, and inner resilience. By learning to pause, manage stress, and stay focused, students can lead, collaborate, and innovate with greater calm and confidence, cultivating the inner foundation of mindful, resilient professionals,” said GSG Professional Development Chair and event leader Geeta Nain. This event follows a GSG-hosted yoga session held during last Thanksgiving Break in the Daniell Heights Community Center. “Both Women in Physics and GSG are interested in supporting students academically, [which includes] sharing tools for improving their mental health and stress relief,” said Fathima Farheen Nambipunnilath Siddique, Women in Physics President.
For those interested in individual meditation, there is a dedicated space on the third floor of the Library. The silent meditation space is available to everyone while the Library is open.
