The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is an annual technology conference held during the first week of January in Las Vegas, Nevada. First introduced in 1967, CES has historically showcased major consumer technologies, including the Video Cassette Recorder (VCR), compact disc, and Digital Video Disc (DVD). CES 2026 took place from Jan. 6 to 9 and emphasized emerging technologies, particularly the growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across multiple industries.

Among the many products presented at CES 2026, two technologies stood out for their innovative use of AI. There was a smart ring capable of recording voice memos and an AI-powered headband designed to improve sleep. These products exemplify the overarching theme of CES 2026, which was embedding artificial intelligence into everyday consumer electronics. The Pebble Index 01 smart ring allows users to record short voice memos with the press of a button, which are then wirelessly transmitted to an app on the users phone. The device utilizes a Large Language Model (LLM), a form of AI designed to process and interpret human language. This system can transcribe speech into text, create reminders, and integrate with other apps, demonstrating how AI can streamline daily tasks.

Similarly, the Elmind Headband applies AI in a health and wellness context. The headband monitors the brain’s response to sound and uses adaptive learning algorithms to counteract alpha waves that can interfere with sleep. By continuously collecting data from the user’s brain activity, the device learns individual sleep patterns over time and improves its effectiveness. This adaptive approach highlights how AI systems can personalize user experiences based on ongoing feedback and data analysis.

As AI continues to expand into consumer electronics and other fields, understanding the different forms of AI and their appropriate applications becomes increasingly important. Given the central role of AI at CES 2026, a short interview was conducted with John J. Romanowski Jr., a laboratory supervisor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Michigan Tech, to gain insight into the ethical implications of this emerging technology. As said by Romanowski, “I am cautious of AI and its usage in different fields and for me to kind of have a level balance and interpretation on how I go for or support it. Are we prepared for the consequences, how do we manage it, how do we regulate it, how do we implement it, and how do we kind of develop it without losing the individual?”

While the integration of AI into consumer products offers convenience and innovation, it also presents ethical challenges that must be addressed. As technology continues to advance and is showcased at events such as CES 2026, consumers, such as students and future professionals, must remain informed about both the capabilities and limitations of AI. Understanding the ethical implications of artificial intelligence is essential to ensuring that its development and use benefit society without compromising human values.
