The start of winter at Michigan Technological University is marked by a familiar and highly anticipated tradition: Broomball Drop. The annual event officially launched the 2026 broomball season, bringing students together on the ice to begin another year of one of Tech’s most popular intramural sports.

Broomball Drop took place on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 5 p.m. and served as both a ceremonial kickoff and a celebration of campus culture. The Dean of Students was present to announce the beginning of the season, after which the Husky Pep Band played the national anthem and the school song. Blizzard then made his way out onto the ice to drop the first ball of the season. Many students gathered to watch as well receive hot cocoa from the Inter-Residence Housing Council cocoa shack.

The 2026 season includes a wide range of conferences, spanning beginner, competitive, advanced, women’s, residence hall, and off-campus divisions. With more than 250 teams participating, Michigan Tech’s broomball program remains one of the largest and most inclusive intramural offerings on campus. “The return of broomball marks the countdown to Winter Carnival.” Said Ken Gryc, a broomball referee supervisor. “It creates a buzz in the air, [the] campus becomes more lively when they see people outside having fun right next to the resident halls.” Games following Broomball Drop have already featured strong offensive and defensive efforts, and tightly contested matchups as teams start the season.

Beyond the standings, broomball plays a significant role in student life at Michigan Tech. Late-night games draw spectators from across campus, creating a shared experience that extends well beyond the players on the ice. Team names, traditions, and rivalries add character and creativity, contributing to the unique atmosphere that surrounds the sport each winter.

As the season continues, teams will look to build momentum, develop bonds, and position themselves for the playoffs. The All-Star Game will be taking place during the Winter Carnival all-nighter on Feb. 4, followed by the Alumni vs. Students game on Feb. 7. As the halfway point of the season approaches, the ultimate goal for all teams is to make it to the championship taking place in the last week of February.

The Broomball Drop reminds participants that the sport is about more than competition. It is a longstanding tradition that brings together students from all backgrounds, encouraging involvement, connection, and school pride during the long Upper Peninsula winter.
