RSO budget hearings and tax timeline

Tax season is coming up, and Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) will need to go through their finances and fill out their taxes.

The best way to start the semester strong is to make time to go to the upcoming informational sessions. They will be held in the first week of classes and provide the bulk of information needed to start preparing for budgets and taxes. The sessions include a detailed presentation and a checklist to make sure RSOs are prepared with all the information they will need for the upcoming tax season. Some major things on the checklist are proposed budgets, creating a detailed inventory, and submitting a questionnaire that will be sent out to allow for a better understanding of each organization.

In addition to taxes, budget hearings for RSOs are a large part of the agenda for this semester. David Reeves, the current Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Treasurer, was able to provide a general timeline of key deadlines that RSOs should be aware of. On Jan. 6, 8, and 9, there will be three informational sessions for RSOs to attend. They will be covering the same information at each session, so there is no need to attend more than one. Feb. 8 is the deadline for material submission and scheduling a hearing. Feb. 27 is the final day to appeal to Ways and Means (WAM) committee. Mar. 18 is when USG will be voting, and it is the final chance to appeal. Finally, Jun. 30 is when the current budgets expire.

For any organizations that cannot make any of the informational sessions, you will need to email the USG treasurer by Jan. 17 to receive the information needed to complete RSO preparation. For any further questions, reach out to the USG treasurer, David Reeves, at usg-treasurer@mtu.edu
