Michigan Tech’s Enterprise program expanded this semester with the addition of the Ink & Ore Enterprise. They are based in the humanities department, and are linked to Paw Prints, The Lode, and Dredged, a new literature magazine. They mostly review, edit, write, and publish different forms of literature.
Students in this enterprise publish literature written on a large assortment of topics. That way, students can broaden their horizons and receive valuable insight into activities they aren’t normally involved in.
When discussing who would be interested in joining such a group, Holly Hassel, advisor for Ink & Ore, said, “Any student who is interested in improving as a writer, reading the work of others, or anyone interested in how publishing works.” The experiences that students gain from being a part of this enterprise program are real experiences that help them be both better writers, but also learn more about the community around them.
Jamie Perlman, lead editor for Paw Prints, said, “Everybody should join. We could use some engineers.” Allie McDermitt, an associate editor for Paw Prints, said, “We need a lot of people who work with the written word. We are currently in need of a graphic design background, especially computer science.”
Not all of their work is spent in the editorial process; some of it includes freshening up their website, which requires the help of computer science students, or those who know how to design website applications. They are hoping for more people to join and thus, spread out their roles accordingly. It doesn’t matter if you have little to no experience; anyone is welcome.
When asked about the vision for students in this enterprise, Holly said, “My vision for students is that they leave with a professionalizing experience. So that they know something about what it’s like to be in a workplace of words. My vision for all MTU students is to see themselves as writers and for there to be a place for them to share their work.”
