In compliance with federal law, Michigan Tech’s Department of Public Safety and Police Services is required to produce and publish an annual report on security and fire safety. On Oct. 1, 2025 the report was sent out to the Michigan Tech community in an email co-authored by Vice President for Student Affairs Laura Buleit and Public Safety Director and Chief Brian Cadwell. The reported statistics are from the three year span of 2022 to 2024, and are produced by Public Safety and use additional information from Title IX, local law enforcement, and the Office of Academic and Community conduct.
There were some notable changes in 2024 compared to the previous year’s statistics. These include an increase in sex crimes, going from one to six in total. Stalking also increased, rising to eleven cases compared to the previous eight in 2023.
Burglary and aggravated assault each fell from one to zero cases. Drug law arrests also decreased to zero. However, there was an increase in liquor law violations resulting in disciplinary referrals rising from 33 to 59. Drug law violations leading to disciplinary referrals fell from nine to three.
No hate crimes nor unfounded cases were reported in 2024, and no crimes were reported on the Ford Center campus in Alberta. The fire safety report states that no fires nor fire damage has occurred in the past calendar year.
The low crime rate at Michigan Tech is reflective of the small student population. Saginaw Valley State University has a slightly smaller student population, and has similarly low crime rates. In 2023, College Magazine placed Michigan Technological University as the safest campus in America. Even so, students are encouraged to stay alert, and report crimes as they see them.
