The Dance Team at MTU is an organization dedicated to performing a range of dances, from pom and jazz to contemporary and hip-hop. They are often seen performing at competitions, university events, and other local scenes. Their president, Calah Holman, is a fourth-year geology major who has danced for the majority of her life. When asked what drew her to the Dance Team, she stated, “When I was up here for a visit one time, I messaged the Dance Team and… I got to meet our advisor, and she showed me a bunch of videos, and it was like ‘this is definitely something that I want to do.’”
Megan Kendall, a third-year biochemistry and molecular biology major, found the organization through similar means as Holman. She explained, “I danced most of my life back at home at my studio, so coming to college, I wanted to continue dancing. So I started checking Instagram and other locations to find if Tech had a dance team, and I found it and… just fell in with it,” Kendall explained.
Both Holman and Kendall started in their freshman year and credit the Dance Team for providing them with diverse experiences, leadership opportunities, and a close community. Both would also go on to say that they’ve met some of their best friends through Dance Team, and that their favorite part of the organization is competing and showcasing with them.
For those who are curious about joining the Dance Team but are nervous about their skills or performing, Holman clarifies that there are many different skill levels in the team, and that performing is not mandatory. Because of the diverse range of styles the Dance Team has to offer, Holman said, “You’re never really alone no matter what level you’re at and there’s always someone who will talk to you.” Kendall also brings up how people who just want to “move their body and be active still” can show up and dance. Besides performers, the Dance Team is always looking for new choreographers too, and new styles of dance are always welcome.
