Upper Iowa got the upper hand over Michigan Tech on Saturday’s Homecoming football game, ending in a 14-21 loss for the Huskies. The matchup, the Huskies’ fourth of the 2025-26 season, kicked off under clear skies at 4:00 p.m. on Sep. 20. A surge of fans eager to see the Huskies continue their three-game win streak overwhelmed the stands and spilled out onto the field.
The Huskies took an early lead over the Peacocks with a 7-0 first quarter. In a brutal response, the Peacocks dominated the second quarter with three consecutive touchdowns, which Tech was unable to match for the rest of the game. Head coach Dan Mettlach described the performance: “Just overall, not Michigan Tech Football. Way too many mistakes. Took some terrible penalties. Put ourselves in bad situations.”
It was a physical game with nearly 150 yards of penalties between both teams. “We’ve been talking about it now for 4 weeks. We gotta clean it up on our side with the penalties.” Mettlach said in a post-game interview, “I can live with a holding foul, that’s an effort thing. But 4 personal fouls, gentleman offsides in crucial situations … These are bad penalties.”
Despite the disappointing first loss of the season, hopes are high for the upcoming conference games. Saturday’s game marked the last of the non-conference matches before Tech moves into conference play. To summarize, Coach Mettlach “likes a lot of what we’ve done in the first 4 weeks,” while cautioning, “at the same time, I think today shows that if you don’t show up, anybody can beat you.”
