As homecoming week progressed, students gathered in Chassell for the annual cardboard boat race on Friday, Sep. 19. The teams were made up of Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and other student organizations to create boats made of tape and cardboard. The theme this year was Where the Wild Huskies Are.
Student Leadership and Involvement (SLI) organized this event to put students’ creativity and seaworthiness to the test. As 39 different groups entered the event, many had drastically different designs. There were boats, rafts, kayaks, and even mythical creatures attempting to row the waters of the Portage. Many of the designs had Greek letters or words to distinguish themselves from the competition. As each group is set to start, the first goal is to try to get into your vessel without destroying or flipping it over. Then the teams must paddle around a buoy in the middle of the lake and back. When you cross the finish line, you must have every teammate and piece of your ship. The winners are determined by whoever can return the fastest.
The event was hosted at Chassell in the Portage from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The location was picked due to the beach being pristine and the space being suitable to accommodate enough spectators. During the event, the weather was overcast with light rain. This did nothing to dampen the mood of the event as everyone was excited to watch the race.
The race concluded with Sigma Tau Gamma winning for the second year in a row.
