Sports Wrap Up – 9/16/25

Football

Michigan Tech Football dominated the South Dakota Mines in Rapid City this past Friday, Sep. 5. The Huskies’ defense smothered, allowing just nine points in a 45 – 9 win. By taking advantage of key plays and holding a strong defense from the start, the Huskies maintained control. Quarterbacks Alex Bueno and Drew Collins combined for five total touchdowns, while the Huskies’ defense forced multiple turnovers. 

On Saturday, Sep. 13, Michigan Tech Football took another victory against Hillsdale. In the first quarter, Hillsdale took the early lead by scoring a touchdown and a field goal. However, the Huskies tied it up before the end of the first quarter. At the start of the second quarter, Huskies showed their strength by scoring within two minutes, taking the lead, and maintaining the lead until the very end. Huskies are now 3 – 0 with their latest win of 34 – 21 against Hillsdale. Their next game is at home, facing Upper Iowa for Michigan Tech’s Homecoming week.

Volleyball

Michigan Tech Women’s Volleyball fell to the University of Minnesota Duluth on Thursday, Sep. 18 in a tight 3 – 2 game. The Huskies scored the first point in a 25 – 19 set, Haxqueline Yancy and Rachel Zurek each earning the team four kills. UMD tied it up in the second set with a score of 25 – 22, and the Huskies responded by winning the third set 25 – 22, breaking the tie. UMD responded by winning the fourth set 25 – 15, tying up the game yet again and forcing a fifth set to decide the game. In the fifth, UMD held onto an early lead and took home the victory in the tight and exciting game. 

On Friday, Sep. 12, Michigan Tech Women’s Volleyball team participated in a double header at St. Cloud State University (SCSU). The first game opponent was Barry University. Tech put up a great battle in each set against Barry; however, they lost 0 – 3. Their next game was against the host, SCSU. Tech kept SCSU on its toes at the beginning of the first set, but SCSU won. SCSU was able to take all three sets, resulting in a 0 – 3 loss for Tech. On the way back to Tech on Saturday, Sep. 13, they had one more game facing Adelphi University. In the first set, Adelphi had a strong lead 6 – 17; however, Tech showed their determination and grit and tied it back up at 23 – 23. Both teams were fighting in overtime to take the lead. The last three points ended with a kill from Rachel Zurek and blocks from Tricia Kennedy, allowing Tech to take the first set 29 – 27. Tech was able to keep their momentum in set two, 25 – 12, and set three, winning 25 – 16.

Soccer

The Michigan Tech Women’s Soccer Team played the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets this past Thursday, Sep. 11. The final score was a 1 – 4 loss for the Huskies. Down 0 – 3 at the beginning of the second half, Braydin Nobel found the assist to Payton Wetzel, who scored in the 56th minute. Despite the loss, the Huskies kept their heads up and are focusing on the positives. After the game, head coach Melissa Kuhar said, “We played well in the second half. It was probably our best half of the season. We’re getting better each game, and we’re still learning about ourselves with a number of new players.” Michigan Tech’s record now stands at 0 – 3 after losing the first two games 0 – 1. With the first goal of the season under their belt, the Huskies are hopeful to put the rough season start behind them.
